Newman Elementary School construction update

Needham - Cost: $27.4 million                                    Completion Date: Fall 2012

Details: Newman Elementary is going through a three-phase major construction operation over the next year. Phase one begins this summer with the construction of 32 modular units, as well as the cafeteria, science area, auditorium, gymnasium and the electrical and mechanical rooms. In the fall, phase two will begin when classrooms and administrative areas in the main building will be repaired, along with rooftop units and the ventilation system. Finally, in the summer of 2012, the third phase will begin, when the modular units will be removed and the parking areas will be repaved.

The progress: Consigli Construction Company began its construction of the modular units this summer. It is also working on improving the parking and circulation around the modulars, partially by adding parking on the tennis courts.
The architects for Newman estimate that the total cost of the project will be approximately $27.4 million, although Needham will only be responsible for $18.8 million, while the state will cover the remaining $8.6 million.
