Mad Science gets into the Sherborn Library

Sherborn - As his nanny looked on, a man in white trench coat and a “Professor Fizzle” nametag started to pour a liquid inside. As the substances met, a misty fog started to rise, prompting laughs and screams from the children.

“I hope this doesn’t explode the whole library,” Bingham said.

He said later that he wanted to be an inventor.

“I don’t know what I’m going to invent,” he said.

The theatrical experiments were part of a presentation being done by a science show called Mad Science of Greater Boston. Scott Wilhelm, the instructor, said that the event was important because children could learn about science while being entertained at the same time.

“You can learn a lot when you’re having fun,” he said.

During the presentation, Wilhelm did various experiments such as mixing dry ice and soap water to make a bubble-drenched foam, blowing up balloons with Co2 gas to show how gasses differ, and combining chemicals with the mysterious substance to create changes in color. As the children watched in awe, they offered bewildered gestures and enthusiastic stares.

The presentation was part of a series of events taking place at the Sherborn Library this summer. On Thursday, July 7, there was a Harry Potter trivia night. There was a concert with “Group Therapy” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, and an “art adventure” on July 18.

Cheryl Ouellette, Sherborn’s children’s librarian, said these events are great because they help bring people into the library while simultaneously getting children interested in academics.

“We want to offer fun events that will bring children into the library,” she said.

“It’s kind of a special outing,” said Susan Tayebati, a mother of four children, at the science presentation.

“It’s hard to do science with them at home. It’s a good outlet for them,” said Emma Harte, a nanny from Allston.

“We’re very happy to be here. It’s nice to see fun, educational free stuff,” said Hellen Dias, another nanny. “No matter what they [the library] have, we will come.”

Wilhelm, who has been teaching at Mad Science since 2008, said that the name “Professor Fizzle” came from his previous job as a teacher for incarcerated youths in Dorchester. He said the two groups of people were immensely different, but benefited the same way.

“They’re worlds apart, yet surprisingly similar,” he said.

He said that his students at the prison and the library alike had demonstrated that young people are born with a strong sense of curiosity, which he said could be filled with science.

“They both have this genuine childhood wonder,” he said.
